You made a grave mistake by asking Dug one simple question, "Tell me a bit about yourself." As our friend Duggy began to ramble, you realized that you couldn't get a word in edge-wise, so you decided to sit back and enjoy the show...

You: Tell me a bit about yourself...

Dug: Well, I first started playing guitar at the age of 9 after picking up my Dad's guitar that was lying around... It just felt right. But enough about me, let's talk about me for a while! I thought you might ask about myself, so I have prepared a slide show for you complete with a detailed outline of my history as a guitar player...

Dug turns on the projector which displays this beautiful image upon the screen:

PHASE I

Early Influences

  1. Beatles
  2. Monkeys:
I had a Mike Nessmith Haircut
  3. Bay City Rollers:
    Plaid, Plaid, Plaid!
(I wanted to leaglly change my name to that of their bass player's - Woody.)

Postscript: Remember, I was only nine!

Took a brief hiatus from guitar to persue a career in Little League.

Rediscovered guitar with one word...

Thus begins...

PHASE II

After discovering KISS, I uncovered a world of music that expanded my musical horizons beyond the Bee-Gee's and Saturday Night Fever (After all, this was 1976). I also discovered AOR FM radio.

Main Influences of This Period

  1. RUSH
  2. Led Zeppelin
  3. Aerosmith
  4. Cheap Trick
  5. REO Speadwagon
  6. Ted Nugent (Free For All Baby!)
  7. Jimi Hendrix!!!!

PHASE III

With the onset of Jr. High and all the new friends that came with it, came their older bothers who wre into the "cool stuff." This was also the time of my first concert, Frank Zappa. It wasn't that I recognized his musical genius, I was more intrigued by the fact that he used words like "Pee-Pee" , "Wee-Wee" and other coloerful vernacular in his songs. Other milestones:

  • NWOBHM
  • My first band, Explorer

    PHASE IV

Pase IV begins with two words... "ALL ABOARD!" Yes folks... OZZY. I was a completely devoted Randy Rhodes fanatic! Probably the most influential guitarist in my life... Also, Michael Schenker and Van Halen weren't too shabby either. The most important part of this period though, is that I met Vince and played in our first band together - Assasin.

    PHASE V
    [The Dark Years]

I still continued to play on and off with Vince. I completely immersed myself in guitar acrobatics (the most important part of a song is the solo, isn't it?)

    I:

    • Learned every scale known to man
    • Became a music major, (I'm still trying to find a way of employing a Neopolitan 6th chord)
    • Spent more money on my hair than anything else... including equipment

There were some high points though. This is when I started teaching guitar (1988).

    PHASE VI

Played with Vince in our last band before NTJ. Luxeterna (1987-1989)

I took a break from bands to devote time to my new bride, Eleni (married 1989). Though I didn't play with a lot of bands, I still continued to teach and also during this time experienced a musical rebirth. I rediscovered the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix and also rediscovered a wonderful thing called a "song." After concentrating so much on playing guitar, I had forgotten what it was all about.

Started jamming and recording with Vince again (1993), and in 1994 won a spot on Gand Music's Chicago's Finest Fingers CD.

    1995 - Joined NTJ!!!

  • Really Cool NTJ Logo!
